June is National Great Outdoors Month
Time to get outside and start walking! Did you know that a brisk 30 minute walk burns 200 calories, decreases joint pain, and strengthens your bones and muscles leading to improved balance? In addition it can improve your creativity, improve your mood, lead to better sleep and slow mental decline. So put on your walking shoes and get outside once a day for a 30 minute walk. Explore your neighborhood and say "Hi" to your neighbors. Visit a state park or just walk the city park down the block.
With a 200 calorie expenditure each day you can lose up to 2 pounds a month. That may not seem like much but over the course of a year that's 24 pounds! Additionally keep in mind that for every one pound of weight you lose that equates to 4 pounds less pressure on your knees and your back, so by the end of the year that adds up to 96 less pounds of pressure on those joints so what seemed like not much when you started can add up to big changes for your joints.
